Question 1-Draft

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Script

*Filmed in the Radio Hartlepool station,  where Lee Theasby is conducting a false interview with me*

Lee: And that was the new hit song from The Hyde Syndrome-'Lies We Lead'. And with me today, is their art and video director, Alex Hooks, to talk to us about the video, which is all over the Kerrang! and Scuzz channels and has over 50 million hits on YouTube.

Me: Thank you for having me. I'm glad to be here!

Lee: That's good, well, we have a few questions here from our Twitter feed which I've collated for you.

Me: Oh right, excellent.

Lee: Yeah, we have one from Jason in Hereford says 'I'm a huge fan, but what makes the video different from other ones in the scene?'
(Subtitled underneath 'In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?')

Me: Well, we did try to make it different from other videos in the genre. The guys wanted a strong message in the video, with a great performance section.

Lee: Yeah, I see that in there.

Me: Well, going off what they wanted, I included a conceptual message through a symbolic narrative. It shows the singer's journey through a valley, where he encounters people who have been lying or dishonest, and as he progresses people begin to leave the valley, showing that they are leaving their lies behind and moving forward.

Question 2-Draft

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

I decided to keep the same theme through the ancillary tasks, in order to create a brand identity. I decided to keep the colour scheme and imagery, to match genre convention. I used the front cover of my Digipak as the main photograph for my advert as it is commonplace among artists to do so, such as the adverts I researched ('21st Century Breakdown' by Green Day and 'Believers Never Die' Fall Out Boy).

I believe the synchronised combination of my Digipak and advert creates an effective brand identity, which also matches genre conventions and provides the unnerving undertones which I intended to portray.

I decided to keep the colour scheme of black and white to match the thematic scheme of my album. The character 'Spring Heeled Jack' was depicted in black and white in the Penny Dreadfuls he appeared in, thus, I chose to stick to this theme. Black and white are also polar opposite colours, and they wholly contrast, ensuring that it does stand out.

I chose this font as it is reminiscent of blood splatters, and also graffiti and also aptly named 'You Murderer'. I decided to use the same font for both pieces to keep consistency throughout, as it adds more of a professional and industry feel to it, but it also keeps the same unnerving tone that was intended with the imagery.

Question 3-Draft

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

This feedback came from Lewis Sketchley, who is the guitarist of Speaking In Shadows, who are the artist for the song I have used. This is for my old piece, and the feedback may be different after I make the necessary changes.

Changes To Ideas

During the planning process, I had to make several changes, both through logistics and due to the amount of people my previous idea required.

I have decided to draw more influence from the videos for 'Dirty Little Secret' and 'Tell Me I'm A Wreck', as they don't have a narrative, but have more of a conceptual theme. I found this to be easier, more flexible, and will portray a stronger message than a narrative could.

I may also change it so it has a solid narrative, but the text would represent speech between the protagonist and other people within the video.

Both options fit genre convention, thus are both feasible for my band and video.
